Fox to develop U.S. version of Torchwood

Posted by:   in News · Comments (0)

012010 1805 Foxtodevelo11 Fox to develop U.S. version of TorchwoodWe can classify this under “train wrecks waiting to happen.” Fox has picked up the rights to produce an American version of the BBC sci-fi spin-off of Doctor Who, Torchwood.

Series creator Russell T. Davies is writing the pilot (and several other former executives of the original are behind the show), so there will likely be many similarities and possibly even nods to Doctor Who continuity. Critics who haven’t seen the original will likely pigeonhole the show as The X-Files with more ostentatious sci-fi elements.

The question is, how will the show be handled? Will it be a complete reboot? Will it be an American branch of the institution? Most importantly, will John Barrowman star as Captain Jack Harkness (hey, he’s already got the American accent)?

However, keep in mind that this is sci-fi on Fox. Despite similarities to The X-Files, Torchwood is a very different show where the characters actually meet alien races with great frequency. Also, American remakes of British shows rarely do well, but there are exceptions to that rule (The Office, for one).

The article also discusses the possibility of the team rebooting Doctor Who
for American audiences. It’s been done. It didn’t work.

Barrowman signed for Torchwood season 4

Posted by:   in News · Comments (0)

John Barrowman, best known as Captain Jack Harkness on the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, has confirmed that he has signed to play the character again in the series’ fourth season. Unlike the mini-series of the third season, Barrowman claims that the fourth will have a full 13-episode run.

120309 1509 Barrowmansi1 Barrowman signed for Torchwood season 4

Given that the majority of the cast was killed off during seasons two and three, this would represent a good opportunity for Russell T. Davies and whichever other creators are involved to re-invent the series. Whether the new series will involve the newest Doctor Matt Smith is anybody’s guess, however given Davies’ departure from the source program (which, granted, was amicable) and his likely desire to similarly remove Torchwood from Doctor Who continuity as much as possible, I doubt it.

So here we have Captain Jack returning to Earth and assembling a new team. Will Gwen be involved as well, child in tow? Are you looking forward to a new season of Torchwood?

Torchwood – Planning Fourth Season

Posted by:   in News · Comments (0)

Torchwood might not have concluded its run at the end of the thrilling miniseries Children of Earth after all – Ianto’s tragic death not withstanding. The new year could bring some “very good news” for fans of the sexy sci-fi series, creator Russell T. Davies tells TV Guide Magazine.

“The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We’ve got great ideas for the show. I think there’s a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season],” Davies says. John Barrowman is finishing his run in “La Cage Aux Folles” in London, so there’s plenty of time to trade his feather boa for Captain Jack’s trench coat.

Oxford’s trickier than Torchwood, says Barrowman

Posted by:   in News · Comments (0)

102609 1047 Oxfordstric1 Oxfords trickier than Torchwood, says Barrowman

He might be able to find his way around a Tardis – but navigating Oxford’s narrow alleys and cobbled streets are an altogether trickier task for actor John Barrowman.

As Captain Jack Harkness, the Torchwood and Doctor Who star can be seen effortlessly blazing a trail across different dimensions and time zones.

But it was the intricate nature of Oxford streets such as St Giles and Blue Boar Street which really stumped the science fiction star.

Not to mention difficulties with Oxford’s large cycling community!

Attending a book signing at Borders in Magdalen Street today, the Broadway star told the Oxford Mail: “Oxford’s a very confusing city to get around, but the buildings are very beautiful.”

Mr Barrowman, 42, added that there were “too many bicycles” and “too many cyclists and they don’t obey the rules”.

He said: “I’m all for cycling, but they should have (vehicle) insurance just like the rest of us.”

And the Scottish-born entertainer is thankful he is tackling Daleks and not Oxford residents in outer space after he was accosted by a woman while admiring the Radcliffe Camera last year.

Mr Barrowman said the woman told him how ridiculous it was that tourists come here and “abuse our monuments”.

He said: “I turned round and told her where to go because you need tourism.”

Despite the problems, Mr Barrowman said he enjoyed singing underneath the city’s Bridge of Sighs while sightseeing, and plans on returning to the city on his next theatre tour.

More than 250 fans queued up for more than two and a half hours to get copies of Mr Barrowman’s memoirs I am what I am signed by the singer.

Clare Rouse, from Middleton Stoney, near Bicester, who queued for an hour and a half, said: “It was unbelievable to meet him, but a bit rushed.”

The 39-year-old, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, added: “He’s got such star quality.

“He’s a real all-round entertainer and whatever he does he’s good at.”

Sandy Grimes, 36, from Sydney, Australia, travelled to Oxford specially to see the Broadway star and has bought tickets to see him perform his West End show La Cage aux Folles four times.

She said: “It was great. John says what he thinks and he’s got so much energy. I think that everyone loves that about him.”

She added: “I didn’t get long enough with him though, but he’s so much better looking in person.”

Brian Fence, 28, who lives in Western Road, Oxford, bought three copies of Mr Barrowman’s book for himself and friends. He said: “He was very nice and very friendly.

“Not only can he act, but he’s a great singer and he’s rather funny too.”

John Barrowman Exposes His Torchwood On The BBC

Posted by:   in Cast, News · Comments (0)

090609 1155 JohnBarrowm1 John Barrowman Exposes His Torchwood On The BBCJOHN Barrowman exposes his Torchwood on the BBC and the BBC apologises:

During Friday’s show, presented by Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac, Grimshaw asked Barrowman, who has starred in Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood: “You’re famous, we’re told for getting your willy out in interviews.

“Is this going to happen today?”

Barrowman responded by saying he was going to “get it out”, amid shouting and laughter.

He was later heard to say: “I didn’t take the whole thing out, but I got my fruit and nuts out.”

After Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross promoted Satanic Slapper Georgina Baillie on the ad-free BBC this is an outrage. Time to hit the (FU*K) Off switch on your remote controls.

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed that one complaint had been received.

One! One! Tough luck, Barrowman. No boost in career profile for you.

Unless the Daily Mail gets hold of it – literally – and broadcasts the offending footage with disgusting pictures of Barrowman’s police box, you will remain as that American geyser from the Dr Who spin off for many years to come…

Torchwood season four is going to happen afterall

Posted by:   in News · Comments (0)

The hugely successful “Torchwood: Children of Earth” has changed the future for Torchwood.  With doubts of its return to BBC for season four, the tables were turned by the fans during the five-day series event.  Even while filming, Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies was clueless as to whether or not BBC would commission a fourth season for the show.

082509 0814 Torchwoodse1 Torchwood season four is going to happen afterall

But the latest news seems to confirm that Torchwood will indeed be back for another season.  It is still unknown whether the new season will be another mini-series or a full 13-episode season, but Davies seems confident that he knows where Torchwood is headed.

Russell T. Davies broke the news exclusively to Torchwood Magazine, saying:

I could write you scene one of series four right now. I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.

Of course, the last sentence suggests we will probably be looking at a new team – “A new form of Torchwood,” especially since the deaths of Owen and Tosh in season two and then Ianto in Children of Earth.

Davies also gave strong indication at Comic Con that Torchwood would return for a fourth season, based on the success of Children of Earth. Dark Horizons reported the following after Comic-Con in July:

Asked about a fourth season of “Torchwood”, Davies wouldn’t confirm any specifics but indicated the success of ‘Children of Earth’ means its a certainty and he sounded excited to be involved. Fans though hoping for the return of some previously deceased cast members should not hold out hope.

Seems Torchwood is much too successful and far too big a property for BBC to let go. Season four is coming – and it sounds like it will be soon!

Torchwood – Russell T Davies Interview

Posted by:   in Cast, Interviews, News · Comments (0)

Russell T. Davies discusses Torchwood’s future in the latest issue of Torchwood Magazine.

Torchwood creator Russell T Davies has the future of the hit Doctor Who spin-off all planned out, he has told the new issue of Torchwood Magazine.

“I could write you scene one of series four right now”, says Davies in a revealing interview with Torchwood Magazine. “I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.”

The news will come as a tonic to fans of the show, which enjoyed runaway success in the ratings when the latest series Children of Earth screened over five nights in July this year. The dramatic finale and the death of much-loved team member Ianto Jones had fans fearing the worst for the future of the show, but Davies’ positive comments will re-ignite hopes that Torchwood will once again return to television screens.

Davies is also confident of writing another compelling series of Torchwood, regardless of the format the BBC decides to choose for the show.

“If the BBC asked for another 13 one-part stories, that’s what we’d do”, Davies goes on to explain to Torchwood Magazine. “I’m ready for anything, but I think it works well as one continuous story. But if the BBC decide they want 13 one-offs, I’ll suddenly decide that¹s the best format in the world!”

The prolific writer, widely credited with sparking the recent revival of parent show Doctor Who, goes on to talk candidly about the origins of Torchwood, and why he thinks the timing was all important for the success of the show.

“It’s been a very intelligent decision to make hay while the sun shines”, he says. “Look at the recession that’s sweeping in now. If I’d tried to get Torchwood off the ground now, they would say there’s no money for it. So while we had one very successful show, we made a strategic decision to push our advantage. Julie [Gardner, then Head of Drama at BBC Wales] passionately wanted a big, strong Welsh drama department but one show is not a drama department, You¹ve got to have more, so we did it while those doors were open to us.”

After Davies’ incredible successes on British shores, where he has also penned the acclaimed drama serials Queer as Folk and The Second Coming, the writer is looking forward to his next challenge across the Atlantic.

Davies tells Torchwood Magazine he believes his trade is taken much more seriously in the USA than it is at home in the UK:

“The attitudes towards drama there are very different, and their outlook is more professional in terms of how they approach the job. I heard this brilliant quote from [acclaimed British screenwriter] Frank Cottrell Boyce recently, where he said that British writers are essentially amateur and they want to go home or go to the pub, but in America they can’t wait to go in to the office.”

Russell T Davies interview appears in Torchwood Magazine Issue #17, due out on 20th August.
